From the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna (abridged) page 99
“I see I am this, and again that. Really I feel no difference. A stick floating in the Ganges appears to divide the water, but in reality the water is one. Do you see my point? Well, whatever is, is the Mother - isn’t that so?”
Commentary: Sri Ramakrishna attempts to explain the realization of Interbeing in a simple analogy for enlightenment. The descriptions of spiritual masters often sound simple on paper but are challenging to practice or to realize. While the stick floating in the Ganges appears to divide the river into separate pieces of existence, it is really all the Divine Mother, stick and water and all, flowing as one. Acquiring the vision for this reality is the challenging spiritual destination described by the enlightened sages.
